I love the balance of pH because it gives you a goal to shoot for in health! It is tangible picture of health, whereas the effects of vitamins or medications is a difficult way to judge whether your chemistry is really working within your body. PH strips monitor the acidity/alkaline balance of your body. You can use two different strips 2 hours after eating and test both your saliva and urine by averaging the results. When you buy the strips from a health food store, the chart of perfect balance will be included.

My challenge with pH balance has always been breakfast. Breakfast is rough because eggs and meat are acid, so quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is a great choice. You can add nuts, dried fruit and just a touch of sweetness for a delicious, satisfying and protein packed alkaline breakfast!

Eat one cup of quinoa (a single serving size), and you’ll consume:

220 calories (70 percent carbs, 15 percent fat, 15 percent protein)

40 grams of carbohydrates (13 percent daily value)

8 grams of protein (16 percent of daily value)

3.5 grams of fat (5 percent daily value with no saturated fat)

A glycemic load (blood sugar spike) of only 18 out of 250

5 grams of fiber (20 percent of daily value!)

20 percent of daily value of folate (various forms of Vitamin B)

30 percent of magnesium daily value (beneficial for people with migraine headaches); 28 percent daily value of phosphorous; iron (15 percent); copper (18 percent); and manganese (almost 60 percent)

Quinoa | Recipe for Life

Breakfast Quinoa

Serves: 4-6

1 cup quinoa

2 cups water

1/2 cup So Delicious original coconut creamer

3 tablespoons turbinado or raw sugar

1/2 cup chopped almonds, toasted (almonds are a natural statin)

1/2 cup dried cranberries (Craisins)

Rinse quinoa in a fine mesh strainer, or purchase the pre-rinsed quinoa. Combine quinoa and water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes more or until water is absorbed, stirring occasionally. Stir in creamer, sugar and top with toasted almonds and cranberries. (I make ahead and eat throughout week.) Keep refrigerated.

JoJami Tyler and Deborah Boland are savvy entrepreneurs and co-founders of Fabulous after Forty, a web-based company that teaches women over forty how to dress and accessorize. I love their package of business, fun, family and friendship. They run this business being based in two separate places and here is what I learned about their recipes for life!

The Recipe for Life of the Fabulous after Forty Glam Gals

Recipe for Life | Glam Gals

Meat of their Recipes (Passion and purpose of each day.): JoJami’s (brunette) days are spent working on the blog for the website. She and partner Deborah (blonde) have been in the business for over six years.

Deborah says her meat is being a good mom and wife to support her children’s dreams. She also uses growing and learning as her meat so she and JoJami can continue to inspire others along the way! They both take great pleasure in helping women look and feel good about themselves.

Health of their Recipes (Taking care of “self”): Jojami enjoys healthy food and exercise and since her mother was a ballet teacher, she dances every day. She is an avid cook and loves to peruse the local farmers’ markets so she can cook with the freshest ingredients possible.

Deborah is mindful of what she puts in her body, exercises and connects with nature (lives on water) to clear her head.

Binder of their recipes (Who they hold close): Jojami’s binder is her husband and family. She is very close to her children and although they all live across the county from one another, she talks to them all the time. Her mother is her rock and her father, sister and brother-in-law are her biggest cheerleaders and inspiration. They all support each other and love each other deeply! She feels blessed in that way.

Deborah loves to get the family together and take a fabulous vacation that includes exploration and relaxation.

Spice of their recipe (What keeps things interesting?): These gals have both adventure and decadence wrapped into their spicy recipes.

JoJami and her husband tour the country in a 38-foot motor home and she has enjoyed waking up to nature each morning. Her life recipe is filled with her many indulgences of seeing new sights, music and theater. She likes to rollerblade and Salsa dance and likes anything outdoorsy. Her evenings of relaxation include pampering and a good book.

Deborah’s passion is traveling abroad. She’s the one bungee jumping, climbing the pyramids and exploring in adventuresome ways. Her relaxation is shopping and a good movie with popcorn.

Recipe on a budget (Diversifying projects to keep the cash flow coming.): JoJami reflected on the fact that since they got rid of everything and have just a motor home and a car, she feels free. In this stage, she enjoys friends, family and good times.

Freedom rings for Deborah as well. She loves having a web-based business because it allows her to work when she wants. She enjoys working when she feels like it.

Complexity (Interesting and colorful aspects of life!): JoJami said that road life is interesting and their bucket list gets new additions as other things get crossed off. She loves meeting the people, seeing new places and trying new foods as they travel.

Nourishment (With a busy life, how to operate effectively): JoJami told me she never says I don’t have time, because she believes you make time for what you want to. She recommends a book called The Happiness Project to be sure you are doing what you want to be doing.

Deborah’s favorite way to nourish herself is to pamper herself with a manicure and a pedicure in a big salon massage chair while getting caught up with her reading. These are her ahh, pure escape moments.

Deborah lives in Canada and with her business partner Jojami living on the road, they Skype daily and get together just a few times a year. They really get a kick out of seeing who has purchased their products worldwide and connecting with women.

Life moves quickly so we might as well create a recipe that utilizes the talents that serve others, make us feel fulfilled while nurturing a style of living unique to us. You can see these Glam Gals have two separate styles of living but together are helping women style their wardrobes and accessories to give them confidence.
Satisfaction in life is key. Plan for your life by choosing where you want to live, how you want to spend your days and how you can serve others. Ready, set GO! Your bucket list awaits you!

This edamame salad made a big hit with friends looking for more pant-based protein. This salad is a vegetarian's dream with 11 grams of protein, essential amino acids and 9 grams of fiber! A colorful salad packed with flavor!

This edamame salad made a big hit with friends looking for more plant-based protein. In just a half-cup serving of the shelled edamame, or in 1 1/8 cup of the pods, you get a snack that is low in calories and high in fiber, with a trace of healthy fats. One serving packs 11 grams of complete protein, containing all of the essential amino acids. That much protein in a plant-based source is a vegetarian’s dream. It also provides 9 grams of fiber. Edamame also contains 10 percent of your daily values of vitamin C and iron, 8 percent of your daily dose of vitamin A and 4 percent of calcium. It also serves as a source of vitamin K and folate. Eat up and feel good about it!

Recipe for Life | Edamame Salad

Edamame Mandarin Blood Orange Salad
Serves: 4
1 (10-ounce) bag frozen shelled edamame
3 blood Mandarin oranges, segmented (all pith removed)
½ cup dried cranberries (Craisins)
¼ cup fresh basil leaves, chiffonade
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (fresh makes a difference)
1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese, divided use
Fresh baby spinach leaves

Cook edamame in lightly salted water (use fine sea salt) for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, drain and set aside until cooled. Just before serving, gently toss the edamame with next five ingredients. Add 1/3 cup of the feta and gently toss. Serve on chilled salad plates, lined with baby spinach. Sprinkle remaining feta on top.

Our blood pH and our results from our blood work are really a reflection of what we eat so why not address a diet of good foods instead of prescribing a pill that masquerades a lifestyle of bad eating habits? I have a philosophy…there is the white coat chef that we love and the white coat doctor that we trust. There is a disconnection though, because the two of them aren’t talking. Or at least the doctors don’t seem to care so much or even ask us about our food choices. They ask us how much alcohol and caffeine we drink, but really nothing else, especially if we are about the right weight for our height. I see this all as a problem.

Recipe for Life | Pay the Farmer

I’ve seen the masquerade that people are creating. There are those who take statins for high cholesterol, but still order the giant rib-eye and I have see the obese person order a super sized sweet tea or drink a can of coke (11 teaspoons of sugar), not to mention the allergy sufferers who can’t get control of their allergies but continue to eat a diet rich in dairy. The unhealthy heart folks are to have just 600 mg of sodium if they are at risk. This 600 mg is less than half of what a 51 plus person should have (1500 mg). Sodium can be a hard habit to break. Just one tablespoon of soy sauce has 1000 mg of sodium. Processed foods typically have high sodium and restaurant food in establishments that buy many processed foods have items with sodium off the charts! Get control of what we are doing to our bodies by checking out what we put in our mouths.

Consider too, that we should be flushing our bodies out with half our weight in ounces of water, but at the same time we should make better choices too. Best way to do this is to eat closer to the earth and chose more produce and less processed. Bottom line, pay the farmer over the pharmacist. Begin to choose a diet rich in gently steamed or raw vegetables, fruits, beans, greens and grains (honest to goodness grains!). Read labels and don’t be fooled by words like enriched (which means stripped) of the benefits.

Work to keep your body alkaline by testing your body pH with saliva and urine test (use two test strips and average the results between the two). Your pH will give you a better blood work (adult report card) at the end of the day (Test at random times during the week and test 2 hours after not having anything to eat or drink). The test strips (from a health food store) allow you to see if you have been eating acid or alkaline foods. Alkaline is what you want for a healthy body. A rich green test strip is perfect! Things that make you acid include the processed foods and sodas. A diet rich in greens helps you to reach optimum alkaline results. An acid body pH is simply stated. The cells oxidize and get damaged (just as wine tastes bad when left uncorked overnight.) If your cells oxidize they have more potential for disease so we protect them with antioxidants. The more healthy foods from the earth that we eat, the better the chance of keeping the cells healthy. There are charts on the internet to guide you to the alkaline foods.
