Tuscan Chef Gina Stipo Eats and Drinks for a Living

July 21st, 2010

Tuscan Chef, Gina Stipo, eats and drinks for a living because she runs a culinary school Ecco La Cucina (translation in English: Here’s the Kitchen!) near Siena, Italy. As a chef, motivational speaker, I, Debbie Gore, interview those with an interesting and successful Recipe for Life. Gina from Ecco La Cucina fits the bill.

Gina found her calling when offered a position to write a cookbook for an Italian estate and vineyard while working in the United States after culinary school. A passion for Italy was developed early when she spent her formative years living with her family in Verona. The passion was stoked further as she traveled through Italy as an adult studying the region foods, cooking with home cooks and chefs. Gina liked the simplicity, freshness and the culture that is intrinsically woven into Italian’s lives via their food, so she made the move to Italy and settled in Tuscany. She wrote another cookbook, a collection of recipes from the Siena area: http://www.eccolacucina.com

Ten years later, Gina’s personal “recipe for life” is quite complete. Centered on her main ingredient is her desire to share her meaty food knowledge with clients, Gina has built a business from this passion. Gina touches people’s lives through her culinary tours and cooking classes that provide guests with introductions to authentic Tuscan cooking. There is a behind the scenes advantage since Gina lives amongst the artisans.

Key Ingredients for Gina’s “Recipe for Life”:
Meaty: (main ingredient) living in Tuscany, sharing her culinary knowledge and the historical treasures with vacationing visitors
Binder: (holds the recipe together!) her mother lives in the U.S.(but she visits her during the winter in Florida) and her sister is her sounding board (her brother is not far away in Belgium)

Gina's Tuscan Kitchen

Healthy: eating Tuscan seasonal foods, drinking good wine, rest, exercise and massages (not to mention great surroundings) contribute to her health and well-being
Spicy: living in a medieval village and visiting surrounding countries with interesting cuisine (Who can beat that?)
Sweet: new customers become friends, local friends remain supportive
Abundant: ten years of hosting fabulous culinary weeks keeps business booming with word of mouth advertising
Colorful: every group she hosts brings a new perspective and they bond over food, travel and the Tuscan countryside

Her recipe is quite spicy when you think of a single girl living in a medieval village in another country. She has access to new cuisines and countries that are just a short distance from her so there are always food experiences to be shared with new friends and her network in Italy. To stay centered and grounded amidst a busy schedule, she takes walks through the beautiful countryside, attends mass at a local chapel, finds time to go to the nearby hot springs, reads a book or goes to the beach.

Her sister and best friend, Mary, is her marketing person and chief operations officer. Every past customer and potential customer depends on the pair to make their Italy experience exceptional. Mary coordinates the week-long food and wine tours, books Gina’s U.S. culinary classes, maintains the website, sends out the monthly newsletters and ships her cookbooks. In addition Mary runs a villa rental business (http://goitalyhomes.com) helping match clients with the perfect vacation accommodations. The dynamic duo has truly built a recipe for success that is fun, cultural and rewarding.

Author Caroline Sutherland Avoids MS w/ Diet ~ June Recipe for Life

June 18th, 2010

Every month, we bring you an inspiring story from a real person who has selected and stuck to a healthy Recipe for Life. Caroline Sutherland, author of The Body Knows…How to Stay Young, has an amazing story. Chef motivational speaker, Debbie Gore was granted a wonderful interview with medical intuitive, Caroline Sutherland and below shares her recipe for life.

At age 39 she had early signs of multiple sclerosis. She was terrified ~ until she visited a clinic for environmental medicine. She discovered that all of the symptoms were related to food sensitivities. As a result, she was taken off sugar, wheat, dairy and caffeine.  Her symptoms disappeared in 4 weeks. Her prescribed diet today is low in carbohydrates with an emphasis on eating plenty of vegetables.

Caroline Sutherland carefully chooses the ingredients that keep her healthy. Her Recipe for Life is:

  • Healthy: she exercises and walks
  • Meaty: she loves helping others (as a medical intuitive)
  • Spicy: she loves adventure
  • Sweet: her husband and family keep her grounded
  • Colorful: her church community and friends enrich her mind & spirit
  • Nourishing: she meditates every day for well-being
  • Financially Smart: she helps an abundance of clients

At age 66, Caroline is full of vitality, and her message of balance is promoted in her lectures, on-line teleconferences and through her books. With the help of a balanced diet, healthy lifestyle and bioidentical hormone therapy, she has a powerful recipe for not only herself, but for those she helps in her practice (www.carolinesutherland.com).

Health and exercise (walking and swimming) is an integral part of Caroline’s recipe and getting centered daily is a part of her overall recipe. As part of her centering routine, Caroline recommends living in “the moment”. She stays present and attentive so that she can reap the rewards, but she also allows herself daily meditation time. Her choice of practice made popular by Deepak Chopra called Primordial Sound Meditation.

Her recipe includes a network of friends that she and her husband, Gary, entertain on their boat, and she also embraces her church community. She feels her spiritual base taught her at young age to get connected to the Divine and foster that connection. The meat of her life experience is motivating and helping people every day and she is generous with both her time and talent, as I personally experienced.

Her pillar is her husband and her binder is her family which includes a sister, brothers and daughters and grandchildren. She keeps her recipe spicy with fun and adventure. A chance to take a train, helicopter, parasail or go to foreign movies are small indulgences that she blends with everyday living. Caroline has an attitude of gratitude for her rich and rewarding life.

Now, Caroline Sutherland uses what she’s learned to help others. She’s a medical intuitive. I loved this blog about pollen and seasonal allergies!

Zarela Martinez-Recipe for a Haute and Spicy Life

May 13th, 2010

Zarela Martinez is one of this generations leading U. S. restaurateurs.  Zarela was born and raised in Mexico but began cooking professionally during the late 1970’s in El Paso, Texas. With the encouragement of Paul Prudhomme and Craig Claiborne, who had been impressed by her vivid Mexican food, she made some nationally noted guest-chef appearances and in 1983 moved her business to New York. As a chef motivational speaker I interview those like Zarela to discover her successful Recipe for Life.

Zarela is an author, culinary instructor, television personality and was recently named to the board of the Mexican Cultural Institute. Zarela’s deep-rooted principles make her Recipe for Life interesting and empowering, especially for women.

As we know, health is really the center of a Recipe for Life. Since she walks up and down the stairs of her four –story home at least ten times a day plus walks everywhere she as part of her health routine. Zarela also embraces a unique exercise program of pilates, martial arts and  Xi Gong yoga that strengthens mind and body. She contributes her good health to eating nutritious meals (no white flour, processed sugars) and has a lot of fun. A passionate person as you can read on her site (www.zarela.com).  Zarela is involved in a multitude of projects that keep her connected to people who share her passions.

She is centered and focused because she has a black and white perspective on whether she has control over situations. She asks herself a simple question. “Can I do anything about it?” If not, she lets it go. She openly expresses her opinions and handles anger as it arises instead of harboring feelings.

Her binder and her network that supports her are somewhat comingled. She has many friends but closest are her “three daughters:” a step-daughter, daughter-in-law and one of her son’s former girlfriends. She is ‘mama” too to several young women in their 20s and 30s whom she mentors and are always there for her.  Her staff is an essential part of her network and her best friends, Elisa and Pedro have been her rocks in difficult times.

Zarela loves to sing, dance and entertain. Even with a restaurant and the hours, she loves to have people in her home. She cooks no matter what the mood. Zarela’s business is so multi-faceted it provides spice, abundance and fulfillment. The meat of Zarela’s life is passion and the universe definitely supports it. Doors have opened and chances have been taken and success achieved with Zarela’s robust appetite for life. Author Debbie Gore is a Dallas-based chef motivational speaker that has a motivationa program called Recipe for Life.
