Can You Eat to Starve Cancer Cells?

March 21st, 2011

What if we could eat to starve cancer cells and in turn stay overall healthier? If we eat the foods that also inhibit tumors from becoming malignant, we also add more plant-based foods which are good for us anyway. Angiogenesis is a normal and vital process that involves the growth of new blood vessels. But what William Li has discovered is that it is also a fundamental step in the transition of tumors from a dormant state to a malignant state. He states blood vessels; the lifelines in our bodies that deliver nutrients to our organs also have a deadly side in that they also feed cancerous growths. So you can see, he’ll suggest we eat better to starve those cancer cells. http://www.angio.org/

“William Li, a cancer researcher, also co-founded the Angiogenesis Foundation in 1994. The foundation’s Project ENABLE — a global system that integrates patients, medical experts and healthcare professionals — democratizes the spread and implementation of knowledge about angiogenesis-based medicines, diet and lifestyle. Some 40,000 physicians have been educated on new treatments, ranging from cancer care to wound care, by the foundation’s faculty of medical experts, and they are bringing new, lifesaving and disease-preventing techniques to people around the world.” TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

What Li proposes is that our diets could be helpful for beating back the blood vessels and we can actually eat to starve cancer by using the natural inhibitor of angiogenesis found in foods. Check out his TED video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_5Z31mUmtc  Feel free to comment on how you feel about this information.

Here is a list that contains foods that contain antiangiogenic substances that can be helpful in starving cancer! Naturally Occurring Antiangiogenic SubstancesAs speaker, chef and author, I study food benefits to share with audiences and found this information in tandem with many of the articles I have written in past blogs!

Phytochemicals and Polyphenols Reduce Risk of Cancer

March 15th, 2011

There is evidence that phytochemicals and polyphenols reduce the risk of cancer. I just returned yesterday from a conference called Designs for Healthy Living in Los Angeles where I was one of the health and wellness speakers. There were several speakers that agreed that our food is affecting our health. Many friends and family members don’t believe this and will not change eating habits to embrace the fact that this evidence is accurate. Being able to reduce cancer is is due to dietary fibers, polyphenol antioxidants and the anti-inflammatory effects of a plant-based diet. Several months ago, I mentioned how foods can help with heart disease and now I am suggesting some of the same foods to ward off cancer. http://www.recipeforlife.biz/heart-attack-decreases-with-plant-based-diet/

Polyphenol |Recipe for Life
• Phenolic acids are an essential constituent of polyphenols and are found abundantly in fruits and vegetables. Two important sources of phenolic acids for anti-aging include blueberries and coffee.
• Honey; most legumes; fruits such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cranberries, grapes, pears, plums, raspberries, and strawberries; and vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, celery, onion and parsley are rich in polyphenols.
• Resveratol is a polyphenol, whose name is recognized due to its attachment to red wine and how good it is for you. Red Wine Polyphenols (RWP) – are compounds derived from grape tannins, so drink up, but drink responsibly.I encourage you to read more about the acidity of our bodies and how when acidic there is more opportunity for cancer cells to grow.

Antioxidant Truth

February 23rd, 2011

Find out the antioxidant truth through reading more articles and checking out the chart below. You’ll want to eat those foods marked “A” on the list. Let’s see if you can more satisfaction from a shoe purchase than plunking dollars in supplements that you can’t measure the success of! And what about the meds–if you are just getting your levels “normal” but still eating lousy, who says they will save you in the long run? Below is the chart to measure your foods by the ORAC value. An “A” means they are the best source of antioxidants with over 75 points. Stick to these foods as often as possible.

According to the antioxidant studies, the higher the ability of the food to neutralize free radicals (air pollution, pesticides, sunlight, tobacco, drugs and even fried foods)-the higher ORAC value your food has. ORAC means Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, and is used to measure the antioxidant capacity of your food. You will see, it is mainly fruits and vegetables in their natural form. This is easy information to digest, if you just take it to heart.

So you and your friends are not in total agreement on how to take care of your health. Maybe one takes prescriptions, one takes a lot of supplements, and the other friend, just eats right and weighs close to their ideal weight based on their height. When you go to the doctor, maybe not much is different on the charts at least in regards to blood work and blood pressure.

Think about it, docs don’t get much nutritional guidance because they are in the business of treating disease, not necessarily preventing disease. Your one friend that takes medications, has the same readings as you do, because you eat right and hers are just back in line because that is what the meds are supposed to do. But maybe she still eats poorly…is the solution really–a pill? One friend takes supplements, how do we really know which supplement is working if you are taking a combination that have never been tested one at a time. Is this a crap shoot or just a waste of money? How can we measure this? Will we ever know the answer since the information from the medical community changes on a daily basis?

Maybe the solution is to get back to nature. You are going to eat on a daily basis so why not eat an antioxidant rich diet? Monitor your health next year with just good foods under your belt, exercise, plenty of rest and some natural sunlight. Consider signing up for the recipe for life newsletter on the home page and get loads of great tasting healthy recipes when you do and in each newletter.

Buy yourself something new with your saved supplement or prescription money and see if you don’t feel better already!
