Heart Attacks Decrease with Plant-based Diet

January 13th, 2011
What if you could decrease heart attacks and a variety of diseases associated with aging with one small change to your life? I t would mean changing your diet to one that is more plant-based. The China Study will be referred to in a new documentary to be released in March 2011. Forks over Knives discusses heart attacks and other ailments being connected to an animal-based diet and it is powerful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPJbYAYzP04  Twenty four hours from the time you read this article 3000 Americans will have a heart attack. Almost 2000 of these will die of heart disease and many will go under the knife for a $46,000 (or more) surgery. Could you change what you put on your fork to forgo going under the knife? It’s  NOT only heart disease in the United States that is high, but uncontrolled free radical damage is part of the processes that give rise to cataracts, hardening of the arteries, cancer, emphysema, arthritis and many ailments including cognitive impairment common with older age. The animal-based foods lack antioxidant shields and tend to activate free radical production, while plant-based foods tend to help prevent such damage.

You could guard yourself in part from free radicals and gain the benefits of vitamins and minerals while eating the most nutrient dense food and need less supplements. Nutrients of beta-carotene, fiber, vitamin C, folate, magnesium and calcium are far more prevalent in plant-based food. A supplement cannot give you the same benefits as a whole food.

Think without meat you’ll be missing your protein? Studies have shown that the human body can derive all the essential amino acids from the natural variety of plant proteins.

Haven’t heard this message before? The China Study’s author T. Colin Campbell proves his statement-remember the Golden Rule-he who has the gold makes the rules. Profits and shareholders are typically protected at the expense of the people and their health.

Owen Meredith Poem about Dining

January 5th, 2011

Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton was a British diplomat and viceroy of India (1876–80) who also achieved, during his lifetime, a reputation as a poet. He wrote this poem below under the pen name Owen Meredith. There is a whole story about this book of value and this gentleman. http://sdrc.lib.uiowa.edu/lucile/.  I stumbled upon it while reading a cookbook that my mother left me called Louisiana’s Fabulous Foods and how to cook them. This poem touched me and I find him fascinating. The fact that he was pursuing his passion while life around him demanded his time and energy for more serious things is something I believe we should all do. I encourage each of us to take the lesson from the Earl of Lytton and allow time for the things of interest to us. The demands will continue, but those things that pass the time that are enjoyable are the true spice of life!

Dining

We may live without poetry, music and art;

We may live without conscience, and live without heart;

We may live without friends; we may live without books;

But civilized man cannot live without cooks.

We may live without books—what is knowledge but grieving?

We may live without hope—what is hope but deceiving?

We may live without love—what is passion but pining?

But where is the man that can live without dining?

Michelle Martin-C3 for Women

January 3rd, 2011

Michelle Martin | C3 for Women

I was lucky enough to connect with Michelle Martin at a Women’s Leadership Conference at IKEA in Frisco in 2009. Our paths continued to cross at networking events. She invited me to speak at the women’s group she founded called C3 for women. I love her message: Connect, Collaborate and Create Success. Her events held at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens give women business owners the opportunity to learn new business and personal development tools. http://www.c3forwomen.com/blog?mode=PostView&bmi=478137

Michelle’s featured “Recipe for Life” reflects back to a time when her life was not her own. Michelle recognized she had been living someone else’s life. It was a life dictated by clients, family and the world around her. Today her recipe for life is her own, but it took an awakening to allow her to take back her own life. Read her story below.

Her awakening may influence you to seek out or tweak your personal life recipe for 2011.

Happy New Year!

Michelle Martin: Founder of C3 for Women ——————————————————————————–

Michelle Martin is an attractive woman and most would think she did not have a care in the world. But one day she woke up and thought she was living in another person’s body. Not happy. Not purposeful or passionate. Michelle decided to change. The year I met her (2009) was proclaimed her “year of discovery”. It was the year she began journaling and exploring what she loved most in her life. Through a retreat hosted by a business coach, she began to create a business model for C3 Women’s Networking Organization. Her business, designed for her lifestyle and needs, allows her to use her strengths, talents, and enjoy each day.See how she created her fulfilling “Recipe for Life”!

Michelle’s Recipe for Life:

The”Meat”of the recipe (main life project or purpose): As the Founder of C3 (www.c3forwomen.com) Michelle Martin has found a passion of bringing like-minded women together once a month so they may build meaningful business relationships and study the tools they need to create success.

Health of her recipe (your “self care”): Michelle has an array of self-care rituals that include: journaling, expressing gratitude, prayer, exercise, a gluten- free nutritious lifestyle and true “connections” with women that share a mindset of mutual support.

Complexity (the depth of your purpose): Michelle has a natural tendency to attract mentors. She also bounces ideas off her husband, a trusted advisor. They discuss the constantly changing world and seek out and learn from those people creating positive change. Michelle’s business is created to develop women to their fullest potential so she is also a Certified Coach that helps women navigate life’s forks in the road.

Binder of her recipe (holds you together and grounds you): With a ten year old daughter, and eight year old son, Michelle enjoys their special sharing time. Michelle is mentoring her daughter and son, experiencing her evolving into a young lady and him a young man. Her time with friends and family is important for keeping her grounded.

Spice in the recipe (adds fun and flavor to life): Michelle loves going on vacation. She and her family find the serenity of the beach and water a great way to rejuvenate. Michelle and her husband enjoy date nights, trying new restaurants, and going to movies to keep their connection outside running the household.

A nourishing recipe (keeps you healthy –body, mind and spirit): Michelle feels God has a perfect plan for her and she trusts that path and therefore is at peace. Michelle uses an afternoon or day, unplugging from technology to regroup. With this down time, Michelle analyzes whether the choices she is making are in alignment with her passion and purpose. Michelle tweaks her business to be exactly as she wants it.

Recipe on budget (a view of abundance): Michelle’s philosophy is to save, to give to others and to plan ahead for unexpected expenses. In C3, Michelle understands women’s individual financial responsibilities and gives her own network options that suit their budgets as well. Michelle offers membership options for attending all meetings or for attending meetings “a la carte” to accommodate a range of members.

Michelle’s recipe is quite a bit different from the recipes for life of 2010 www.recipeforlife.biz/blog but what they all have in common is a plan. Michelle’s was different because she had to come to terms with the fact that she had been living in someone else’s recipe instead of her own. She changed that by taking control of her life and what ingredients she felt were authentic to her. She understands keeping her head, heart and gut feelings in alignment, and when her body says to her…I am uncomfortable, that choice feels wrong for me-she pays attention and chooses differently. Her awakening is what my Recipe for Life book is about. WAKE up and realize you have a choice to build a recipe without the influence of others and just the way you like it!

In 2011 make a choice to create your recipe for life with only the ingredients you want and eliminate those ingredients that spoil the recipe. As we reflect back on 2010, I like to remember some of the great new relationships I have nurtured due to circumstances that seem serendipitous.
